Spectrum Quilt by Fresh Lemons Quilts

choose your fabric, get the pattern, and start cutting!

Hurray! It is the first week of the Pattern Drop March Quilt Along– a Sew Your Stash Quilt Along!

Today is all about fabric choice–the Spectrum Quilt pattern by Faith Jones Maybe is pretty ideal for a stash quilt along, because it looks great in solids, coordinated prints, and scrappy! [And there is no quilt police, so if you want to buy something new, that’s cool too!]

I’m so happy Lee Heinrich from Freshly Pieced took some time to talk about how she selects fabrics, and she also shot some video of her studio, which looks like such a happy, beautiful space. Check it out!

After watching Lee’s video, I went through and pulled some fabric choices from my own fabric stash. I tend to stash basics–solids, color on color, and color + white. Makes it easier to mix and match! I love the look of big prints, but try to limit my purchase of them to specific projects, instead of stashing. And truthfully, I could probably never buy fabric again and quilt for the rest of my life. Sigh.

Since it is March, and spring is approaching in the northern hemisphere, all of these fabric pulls are light, bright, and springy. Is that a word?

Since this quilt pattern uses 5 main colors, I went through my fabric and pulled some that I thought would work for this quilt!

I paired 2 of the older Rifle Paper prints (from Cotton and Steel) and added in 2 solids and a quieter, coordinating geometric [print is by Carolyn Friedlander]! Wouldn’t this make a pretty quilt!?

I love these Wink fabrics, by Birch Organics. Sometimes, I love pairing the same print in different colors together!

I think this quilt would be really fun to make with a colored, instead of white background. These fabrics would be fun together, wouldn’t they?! Something soft and springy.

Solids are always a good choice. I paired a few that I might not usually use, and am really liking them.

Stuck on a color palette? Check out Design Seeds!

[Design Seeds has Color Almanacs that you can purchase, where you get hex codes[color codes] too, which is pretty awesome.]

Pattern: Spectrum by Faith Jones of Fresh Lemons Quilts–it is the March Pattern Drop pattern, so if you sign up for Pattern Drop any time during the month of March, it will be delivered to your email inbox. If you are already signed up, look for a pattern email on the first Wednesday of the month, which is March 7. [note: if you sign up after March 7, we have an automated email that will be sent to you. It sometimes takes a few hours for our payment gateway to communicate with our automated system, but you will get it shortly!]”

Fabric: This quilt looks great in almost any combination! Faith originally used solids–ombre fabric no less– for her quilt! I used a variety of Alison Glass fabrics in mine, and made a smaller version [bonus baby quilt instructions available with this month’s Pattern Drop pattern] using a single Kaffe Fassett print paired with a solid for the binding and 3 of the flying geese. This quilt would be pretty awesome with a variety of prints, so it might be time to raid your scrap bin.
